The changes in social case work during the last twenty years, within which span the use of mental hygiene principles, the expansion of the public welfare services, newer applications from the various sciences to the problems of human needs, developments from the field of labor relations, have all surged forward together, make the presentation of a new book timely.

Modern social work employs three methods of assistance: case work, group work, and community organization. Case work is the method by which individual persons and families are assisted. The person in need of case work may be physically, mentally, or socially handicapped.   As a social worker on the Hill, I have had a front row seat during battles over the welfare state.
